Although neither of us were born & raised in Alaska, we have fully committed to Alaska being our home. Fitness, nature and choosing the not-so-easy path has been our mode of operation since the beginning. Here is a short story on how we got to be here today.

Becca grew up in Ontario, just outside the metropolis of Toronto. Always athletic, she chose to pursue skateboarding and snowboarding as an adolescent. Although not a typical skater punk, she could definitely “shred the gnar.” She proceeded to be a Snowboard Instructor and found passion in the coaching space. She also participated in swimming, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, flag football, cross country and track through middle and high school. She could never pick just one sport. In college, Becca knew she wanted to be in the health and fitness realm and pursued a part-time job at a local fitness club to help keep individuals in shape.

Josh grew up in rural Wisconsin and was a four-sport athlete from middle through high school. Baseball in the summer, football in the fall, basketball in the winter and track and field in the spring. He would ride either his bike or skateboard to and from school (uphill, both ways in FEET of snow 😊) through high school. Weightlifting was a part of the gym curriculum and the sports community, so naturally he found himself in the gym most days after school.

Josh met his better half Becca in the spring of 2012 in San Jose, California where they both were attending Palmer West College of Chiropractic. Although Josh departed school for 6 short months to join the Army Reserves, they both managed to graduate in the spring of 2015. One year later they had a 5 month old daughter and moved to Anchorage, Alaska for a job opportunity.

In 2016, Josh started coaching at Turnagain CrossFit. Within a year, Becca also pursued her CF-L1. During this time, Josh and Becca were scheming plans to build a sports chiropractic business in Anchorage to serve the public with a “new wave of care” and founded BoreTide Chiropractic in the spring of 2018. BoreTide was built inside of Turnagain CrossFit, which led to them purchasing Turnagain CrossFit in the summer of 2019. Leading the community through the pandemic, Turnagain CrossFit continued to grow and push boundaries coaching hockey teams, soccer teams, and individual athletes from young kids to 76 year olds into discovering new limits and goals.

The winter of 2022/2023 came with heavy snow falls and, along with the elements of Alaskan winters, tested the structural designs throughout Alaska. On February 17, 2023, during the CrossFit open 23.1 workout, the roof collapsed, resulting in the death of one member, trapping another, and injuring a handful more. Through this incredible tragedy, the communities within Turnagain, Anchorage and the greater CrossFit organization, found a new purpose to honoring their friend and all those selfless individuals that showed up and helped in a time of need.

Through all the adversity, there was a light that continued to shine. Owners of CrossFit Alaska (CFAK) Kelly and Kevin Linebarger were looking to move on from owning the gym to focus on other professional and personal goals. Josh and Becca were looking for a new place to call home for the Turnagain CrossFit (TCF) community. With a little bit of grit, maybe more than a few tears and lots of camaraderie, we merged our two communities into Turnagain CrossFit Alaska (TCFAK).

We are proud to have the opportunity to raise our daughter, grow two businesses, and experience many of Alaska’s great beauties. As our communities grow, so do our hearts for this crew of individuals that have come together to make our TCFAK family.
